Lung/ heart infection?

I'm very worried about my dad. About two weeks ago, he started getting sick. We thought it was just a cold. He was getting a cough, and wheezing a bit. But it is not a cold. The wheezing got a lot worse, and sounded like a loud crackling noise coming from his lungs. He was CONSTANTLY coughing and wasn't breathing very well. About a week ago, he went to the hospital, thinking maybe it was bronchitis or even pheumonia. They did a bunch of tests, and weren't sure what it was. They gave him some kind of antibiotic and two puffers. They thought it could have been some kind of whooping cough, but they weren't totally sure. Now he's been to see his own doctor a couple of times and they are sending him for more tests and an EKG. Maybe it's some kind of heart or lung infection?? They don't really know either! They've put him on a water pill to try and reduce some fluid from his lungs and around his heart. His breathing is much better now than it was two weeks ago. He can breath ok, and there is no more wheezing. But he still coughs all the time. ??? Does this sound like anything identifiable!?! We're at our witts end here.
