Is it legal to cut your front license plate?

So I got a fix-it ticket a while back for no front plates but the only place I can put it covers my fog lights, I've seen someone that just cut all the extra crap off and just had the 7digits showing, basically it was as thin as euro plates. Just wondering if anyone knew the legalities of this? Since you don't need stickers on the front plate I figure as long as they can read it then it should be fine. Any input helps, thanks
