Do schools in the UK not give out nightly homework? And what exactly does "revision" mean?

I was trying to explain to a friend in the UK what "study" meant, and he was trying to explain what "revision" was. he also said that they don't get nightly homework or periodical tests and quizzes. is this just his school or all schools in general? and whats revision?
